REFLECTIONS: The Music of Faure and Mozart
Bask in the beauty of Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Solemn Vespers (K.339).
In a letter to his son, Fauré once wrote, "To me art, and music especially, consists of raising ourselves as high as possible above that which is." Fauré achieved that with his beautiful Requiem. Breaking with tradition, Fauré eschewed the anger and wrath of the usual "Dies Irae" movement, replacing it with the tranquil "Pie Jesu." And unlike many requiems, his ends with the transcendent, hope-filled "In Paradisum"— a movement that Chicago-based Conductor Michael Lewanski aptly describes as "resolving the tensions of the world."
Our second featured work, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Solemn Vespers (339), is (despite the name) infused with energy, excitement and joy. When we are joined by our guest soloists, Soprano Rachel Evangeline Barham, Mezzo Mary Ellen Cain, Tenor Kyle Burke and Baritone James Rogers, this piece will soar, along with our spirits.
